Choosing the Best Packaging Size for Your Product
Sizing doesn’t need to be overwhelming
Picking a size sounds simple — until you’re actually faced with the options. Too small and it won’t fit. Too big and it feels like overkill. Suddenly, something that should take five minutes becomes one of the most confusing parts of the whole process.
If you’re not sure where to start, that’s completely normal. The good news is: it’s easier than it seems.
Start with the product, not the box
The best way to approach sizing is to start with the product itself. Don’t worry about the box straight away — just measure what’s going inside. Width, depth and height in millimetres. Include any extra components like inner packaging, filler, or a card if it’s part of the presentation.
Understanding the sizing on our site
Once you’ve got those measurements, you can start comparing them to the product sizes listed on the site. Everything is shown in external dimensions — that’s the size of the box from the outside. But what matters for your product is the internal space, which is a touch smaller.
If you’re designing a custom box, there’s a toggle when you enter your dimensions that lets you switch between internal and external sizing. That way, you can build the box around your product — or build your product around the box — depending on what works best.
Use templates to double check fit
The other helpful tool is the template. Every box on the site comes with a downloadable die-line that shows you all the internal panels, fold lines, and print areas. You can use it to double check sizing, see where your artwork will land, or even mock something up before ordering.
What makes a good fit?
Getting the fit right isn’t about being exact to the millimetre — it’s about making sure the experience feels intentional. For some products, that’s a snug box that holds everything firmly in place. For others, it might mean a bit of breathing room so you can add tissue or make the unboxing feel premium. It depends what you’re creating.
Still unsure? Sample it first
If you’re stuck between two options, or you’re just not 100% sure, we always recommend ordering a sample. You can build a pack of different sizes directly on the site if they’re available — or just reach out to us and we can talk it through with you. It’s the easiest way to test things in hand before committing.
